Really! Next time you need to get away from Michigan's frosty deep freeze - Just stop in & take a warm stroll through our greenhouse - for free! Its like a tropical jungle in here!

George & I just got back from a plant finding expedition to Florida - We both agree - it exceed our expectations! Not only did we find oodles of "neat new stuff" we can't wait for you to see, we found several plants I've been looking for, for years! We brought many of these back with us, with so much more to arrive over the coming weeks - way more than I can show you here, but I'll give you some of the highlghts:

When we go on road trips like this, every inch of space counts! By the time we were done packing our trusty Sprinter, after more than two dozen stops, you couldn't have shoved a tennis ball in there!

Our first stop, in Georgia, pointed out that even the cactus (Opuntia/left) were cold. We picked up our NEW cottages for miniature gardening and some yummy pecans for our bellys at the pecan farm. (I should mention - I've added over 100 new items for miniature gardening this year - including some Telly's exclusives I designed.) - More on that later.

For some reason, I love yellow plants, so I'm always glad to find new ones! From left to right; Philodendron 'Lemon Lime' (with pink stems), Caladium 'Yellow Blossom' (We offered the first of these in the country a few years ago under the name 'Leung Pa Li Chart' - the true name, when I managed to get a handful of corms from Berry Yinger), and the bold new Schefflera Amate called 'Soleil', with broad leaf clusters spanning more than a foot across! WOW!

My fondness for Alocasia continues to grow with our unmatched selection. As just a teaser, here are three new ones (left to right), 'Loco' - only seeing this plant in person can do it justice - suffice it to say - its just plain crAzY!, 'Bambino Silver Arrow', and 'Bambino'. The Bambino series are new dwarf introductions which only grow about 10" tall (smaller than the ever-popular 'Polly') and produce full, generously leafed plants perfect for the desk, office, or combos. We also have 'Bambino Curly', (not pictured), with several more new Alocasias, Colocasias, and Zanthosomas we'll introduce to you soon!

Its been decades since cactus and succulents have been anywhere near this hot! And when it comes to variety & selection - we've got you covered! We've added more than a hundred new varieties for 2011 in this catagory alone! Quadricolor Agaves, - Pink, Blue, Purple & Burgundy Succulents, and a chartreuse variegated cactus thats thornless! - Now that's savvy!

But we brought back more than just plants! Check out our instant wall-art for plant lovers with these shadow boxes! Our tissue culture glass ornaments with living plants sealed inside can bring the science of plant propagtion to the school or home! We even found Ying-rock for Pentsai and Seisuki enthusiasts, & the creative geoligists at heart - though our supply is limited - so HURRY IN for these! And, since we've had increasing requests for "Lucky Bamboo" (which really isn't a bamboo at all, but a Dracaena), we thought, why offer what you can find in every chinese food market or restaurant? Check out our multiple art-forms of this intriguing plant - triple braided, variegated stems, - triple layer pyramids, - and petite minis perfect for the tiniest space at $1.99! We've also brought in hard-to-come-by cork bark, grapewood, and tree-fern pots for mounting your epiphytes (air plants)!

Speaking of epiphytes - these easy-to-grow botanical conundrums are far more varied than most people think - and we have the selection to prove it! Some are enchanting, some are curious, and some are - well, franky, so just plain ugly - you have to love them (or who else will?!) They've inspired us to set up a new section in the greenhouse for crAzY plants we'll call "The Sanitarium" - good bet that's where I'll be hanging out . . .

Yep! - We found some pretty crAzY stuff! And everything I've mentioned - plus a whole lot more - fit in that Sprinter for our 4000+ mile road trek - And they're ALL in the greenhouse for you to see RIGHT NOW! - Come check it out & give yourself a break from the Michigan winter! Yes, it has been far too long since I've posted, I know. But I'm glad you're here and checking it out! We are fortunate to say it has been a very hectic season for the staff at Telly's, and a year well worth experiencing. Getting our new growing facility up and running was a huge undertaking, as was the opening of our new location in Shelby Township. This has kept us all very busy indeed!

FAREWELLS:

After all this time, some staff updates are sorely in order . . .

We were all very much saddened by the loss of Hector, our Bonsai expert this past July. It is under his tutelage that our Bonsai department was delveloped and nurtured, and he was a major contributor to the Four Seasons Bonsai Club of Michigan. He is fondly remembered, and the seeds he planted & shared with us continue to grow.

In August, we congregated one last time at The Gathering Place for mass reflections with our friend, co-worker, and designer extraordinaire, Sara. Off to Iowa to begin a new act in her life adventure, we all wish her well in this, the newest part of her journey. We will miss both her presence and her spirit, as well as her unstoppable inspirations & jaw-dropping botanical creations.

- Our loss is Iowa's gain - far more than they could yet know . . .

FLAHSLIGHTS:

Our 6TH Annual Flashlight Sale was an absolute blast! Perhaps singularly, the most fun shopping event of the year, we always look forward to it & really enjoy the flashlit ambiance of the hundreds of guests who attended this exclusive event! - Thanks to everyone who participated! Every year, about this time, plant companies from all over the world gather along 460 miles of the west coast of California to show off their varieties. At about 22 locations from San Diego to San Jose, more than 40 displays are set up for growers, retailers & brokers to see thousands of beautiful annual plants including new varieties for next year (2011). We have been coming here for years to photograph & learn about countless plants the world's greatest breaders have to offer. We use this opportunity to evaluate what's available, which plants will perform well, and select new plants to grow in the future. Here are some "sneak peaks" of some of the new plants we may be offering in 2011!
Begonia 'Gryphon'

A Rex begonia from seed! I believe this will be one of the more popular annuals for 2011, because it produces a full, saleable plant much more economically, & quicker than conventional methods. This shade loving plant may be grown in beds or containers, and, like most begonias, it makes a beautiful houseplant as well. The silvery leaves have an equally attractive maroon reverse.

Begonia 'Illumination Gold Picotee'

This addition to the 'Illumination' series of cascading tuberous begonias adds a beautiful orange & gold bi-color flower to the palette. This is ideal for hanging baskets, but may also be used as a component in shady combinations. These are easy-to-grow plants that require very little maintenance.

Calibrachoa ' Superbells Coralberry Punch'

This flower has a unique combination of colors. The outer coral edge surrounds a deep orange interior with a yellow center. Like most calibrachoa, it has a trailing habit that is ideal for hanging baskets, or as the floriferous trailing component in container combinations. Grow in full or part sun.

Canna 'Tropical Bronze Scarlet'

This addition to the 'Tropical' series of the first seed grown bronze-leaf canna! Seed is one of the few methods available for producing virus-free cannas. Plants grow about 3' tall, and produce deep scarlet red flowers above bronze-tinged foliage. I have already sown some of these to sample for this year, and am looking forward to seeing the results. Full or part sun.

Dahlia 'Lucky Face'

The photo here says it all; a unique combination of colors on one, very showy flower! Blooms are about 4" across on compact plants that grow about 15" tall. Like other Dahlias, 'Lucky Face' thrives in full sun.

Iberis 'Aboslutely Amethyst'
This is one of the few new perennials featured at the California Spring Trials this year. Perennial candytuft traditionally bloom pure white in spring. 'Absolutely Amethyst' has a completely different look with this new color! Plants do exhibit some rebloom in fall. Iberis are long-lived perennials that form mounds about 8 - 12" tall and 18 - 24" wide.

Impatiens 'Patchwork Peach Prism'
This new color combination promises to be stunning in hanging baskets, and inspiring for shady combinations. Unlike traditional bedding impatiens, this one is grown from cuttings. Best grown in full or part shade.

Petunia 'Black Velvet'
This plant gets us as close as we can get to a black flowering bedding plant. These upright plants produce flowers all summer in full or part sun, but will require some deadheading. The developers are emphasizing that this color goes with everything. From what I saw here in California, I think they are right.

Petunia 'Easy Wave Pink Dawn'

I'm seeing dozens of new petunias out here, but a new wave is always good news. This wave is baby pink with a vibrant white center. It combines beautifully with some of the other colors, but also shows stunningly on its own. These self cleaning plants will spread and form a carpet of low maintenance color in full or part sun.

Petunia 'Potunia Papaya'

Potunias are the mounding version of the perfect petunia. 'Potunias' are compact and self-cleaning; they are great for bedding, as a components plant, and in hanging baskets. This is a stunning new color like no other in the petunia palette: sort of a cross between coral and orange.

Scaevola 'Suntastic'

This is the world's first yellow scaevola! The flowering is still light, and the flowers are somewhat small, but nonetheless, a breading breakthrough! If it performs nearly as well as its blue & occasionally pink cousins, this is the beginning of something interesting. Good for hanging baskets in full or part sun.

Verbena 'Estrella Voodoo Star'

I saw this plant in three different places out here, where it stood out from the rest each time. The trailing plants seem very floriferous & vigorous. This verbena is sure to draw some attention next spring!

First off, let me begin by saying Congratulations and Thank You! (Also, please forgive my break in format as I dispense the following editorial dissertation.)

In the day to day ongoings of our lives, it seems (to me) that big business & politics win out way too often over & at the expense of small businesses & the common man. So much so, in fact, that such impingement upon our lives has become compulsory & so covertly ingrained in the status quo, that even the most astute of us fall prey to complacency in regard to it. It is also unfortunate, that perhaps we are more likely to note the exceptions than the commonplace atrocities. But it is good that we do note them, and are worthy to the celebrate disrailment of such injustices.

So then, we invite you to celebrate with us. For far too many years, the City of Troy, in contradiction to the cries of it's citizens, and the tenants of reason, has elected to persecute, and attempted to interfere & obstruct with the operation of one of her longest standing family businesses; Telly's Greenhouse. This, they have done in a continual fashion, at substantial expense to her taxpayers, and an operation which gives generously of time & resources to the citizens of it's community. Alas, at last, it is behind us!

After countless losses under the position of the court, the city has finally, with reason, opted to cease it's endless litany of inane appeals. The "Right-To-Farm Act" still stands. We prevail. Chalk one up for the common man!

We, and farmers across this great nation thank you for your support, for standing at our side, and for using your voices in support of us. Thank You, and Congratulations!

I love this time of year in the greenhouse! The air is once again filled with the moist oxygen-rich air of living, growing things - each breath is refreshing - and every moment, the palpable excitement we feel for the coming spring grows! This time of year, things begin to change so quickly . . . Susan & Sara are hard at work potting thousands upon thousands of roses. Their dedication & attention to detail is insiring as they imbue each plant with the quality only we can offer! We also extend a warm welcome to Scott, out new assistant grower, as he & Mike M. oversee the nurturing of all the new babies arriving at the production facility.

Over the past week, I've stocked litterally thousands of fresh houseplants & tropical treasures from Florida including more than 20 NEW varieties for 2010! A BIG thanks to Mike & George for helping me unpack them! Here are just a few highlights that came out of those boxes:
Calathea 'Jester'
Calatheas are easy to grow mederate to lower light plants. This one, with is enigmatic flashes of cream, chartreuse & yellow is sure to brighten any room!
Cissus amazonica
Also called "Amazon Jungle Vine", this tendril climber is considered rare (I've been trying to get my hands on this one for a few years now). We are proud to offer it, but if you're interested, hurry in - I only have a handful!

Vanilla planifolium 'Variegata'
Speaking of rare, how about a variegated Vanilla bean orchid? Yep - They're here - and at a Telly's price! They are easy to grow if you remember two things; they like bright, diffused light, & should be kept evenly moist (not wet).

Cattleya Orchids
This year, our Orchid selection is better than ever! Far mor than the common fare you will find elsewhere, our selections include; Ludisia (terrestrial Jewel Orchid), Oncidium, Cymbidium, Dendrobium, Phalaenopsis (Moth Orchid), Vanilla, and some pretty cool Cats (Cattleya) - ALL at Telly's pricing! - We will also be unveiling several varieties of summer blooming orchids later in the season - perfect for the patio & combination pots!
Nepthytis (Syngonanthus) 'Emerald Gem'
We haven't stocked "Arrow Vine" for a few years now, but this one, with it's bold and ghostly white random flashing is a real stunner!

Colocasia 'Elena'
Those of you who know me know I love my "Elephant Ears". New for 2010, 'Elena' has strong potential for containers with its clearly chartreuse leaf, & a purple splotch in the center! Hmmm . . . .
Aglaonema 'Spakling Sarab'
I'm not sure yet if this variety is as indestructable as other "Chinese Evergreens", but, if it is; Katie - bar the doors! Nearly translucent cany-pink stems hold pink & white veined leaved with pink & white confetti splashes! This one has be seen to be believed!

SEEDS ARE IN! (And boy, are they ever!) With nearly 600 varieties in stock already, this year's spread includes more than 100 Heirlooms, 125 Certified Organic seed varieties, and 130 NEW selections for 2010! Sprouts are back (with an expanded selection) plus our new microgreens & growing kits - perfect for "feeding" that "growing" itch - right now! (I can hardly wait to get started - Oh wait - I don't have to!)

We are expecting a huge shipment from our sub-tropical friends on Saturday! In addition to tropicals & houseplants, it will also include fresh assortments for Bonsai! This is going to be a very fun shipment with some extremely cool plants on board. I'm very anxious to get it unloaded & displayed so I can unveil some of the "neat new stuff" for 2010! Well, it's taken me a while, but I finally managed to get the "Kids' Patch" up on the website. (A BIG thanks to all the great folks at the University of Illinois Extension for all their help & support!) They have put together some really super-cool stuff for kids, now available on our site! - (If I weren't me, I would be embarrased to admit I spent a good eight hours turning into a six-year-old checking out all these neat things for kids to do while they learn about plants, & gardens, & the world around them!) DO YOURSELF A FAVOR - Take a few minutes to be six again & check it out!

Next up - Some KUDOS are in order! Over the past month, several of our Telly's-team members have earned accolades from the industry! George was featured in "Green Profit" magazine. This is a green industry publication which seeks out indivuals & businesses that do things right. It is one of several places people in our business go for information, inspiration, & advice. KUDOS George!

The OFA (Ohio Florist Association) puts out another such publication. In January's edition, Our very own Susan was featured as "What Every Gardener Want to Find in Their Garden Center". Selected for her incredible knowledge of roses, the unmatched quality of the roses she grows, and her unsurpassable level of customer service, Susan was dubbed "The go-to expert on roses in metro Detroit!" (We've known for years that she is the best of the best! - We are all very proud Susan is part of our team! Give here a pat on the back the next time you see her (just don't sneak up behind her - she might have a pair of pruners in her hand!) KUDOS Susan!

January has also brought another honor among our ranks. This month's "Fine Gardening" magazine features an incredble article on houseplants by our very own Julia! Be sure to check it out! Her beautiful article is so elequently written, you hardly need the photos of plants (but I'm glad they included them!) Julia's broad range of talents, knowledge, and her down-to-earth ability to convey them will never cease to amaze us! KUDOS Julia!

I'd write more, but I have to go buy some houseplants now!

We love the fact that what we do brings beauty to your lives & gardens, but not everything we go through to make that happen is, in itself, pretty. While the rest of us are running around tying up loose ends, wrapping presents, or trying to find that loose light bulb on the Christmas tree, Mike Maran, our Grower is in the trenches at Shelby. Here, knee deep in what must be some pretty cold mud, Mike spends hours running & connecting all the water lines for the new production facility. It is this kind of hands-on dedication (in front of & behind the seeds) by many of our staff that enables us to continue to bring you the Gardener's Paradise each year! (I, for one, will never take for granted the ability to water a plant in need!)

We are all so very happy & proud to present the newest addition to the Tellys Family - Kathy & her husband Chris have announced the arrival of their new blessing; Christian Gabriel Hsieh, born December 15 at 3:10pm, 10lbs. 1oz. - 22" long! Way to go, guys - & a heartfelt congratulations from all of us! (We can hardly wait to help Christian start planning his very first garden!)

Its hard to believe that a mere six weeks from now, our new production facility in Shelby will be up and running! -This is going to be a nail-biter! Despite the weather, it is finally covered, and gas & electric will be hooked up over the next week. George has been out there every day in rain & snow & 50 mile per hour winds ensuring everything is completed to his exacting details. The shot above is of the inside of the headhouse which connects the entire complex. With a gutter height of 20', you could fit 15 semi trucks in here with room to spare!

Lots of site updates have been made over the past week, including multiple care sheets filled with helpful tips & tricks on growing specific plants, with many, many more to come. I'll be populating the 'Horticultural Care' page (under departments) over the next several months. Shortly, I will begin posting some of the exciting new finds for 2010, as well as some long lost old ones! Several new "Behind the Seeds" videos are also in the works for the Tellyvision segment of the site.....

In the mean time, remember to enjoy each day for what it is, appretiate each person for who they are, and take the time to stop & smell the roses . . . or cyclamen . . . or jasmine . . . or . . .

Well, we may all be knee deep in holiday preparations, and mentally preparing for the first snows of the season, but in the greenhouse, spring is already well under way! Our first planting of Fuchsia cuttings are now on the germination tables, to grow the very first roots of their very young lives! In just a few short weeks, we will be potting these into baskets to ensure they will be burgeoning with color in time for Mother's Day!

Elsewhere on the property, our famously high quality selection of Christmas trees is looking incredible! To help you in your selection, I've posted a Christmas Tree Selection Guide on our site, which I hope will prove to be informative & helpful in making your way through the tradition pursuit of the perfect tree for your holidays! Well, I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving, and found plenty to be thankful for! Personally, I'm thankful for my health, my friends & family, the fact that I have such a great job, & that I work with & for such wonderful people! I am also thankful that in addition to some major progress on the website over the past few weeks, I have finally managed to lauch one of my many pet projects; "Tellyvision"! Some of you may have seen this running from time to time at our info center at the Troy store, but it now (finally) has a permanent home. These are short videos I've created in my "spare time" revolving around various aspects of the greenhouse. While only a handful of videos are currently available, I'll be adding new content as time allows. I hope you'll check it out, & as always, I look forward to your feedback! Ok, guys, sorry for not getting any posts up for awhile - this is long overdue. It's not that nothing new has been happening, in fact, quite the opposite! Back in August, Telly's purchased the old Mueller's Sunrise Nursery in Shelby Township. We had been looking for a closer location for our production facility for quite some time. With the new facility under construction, we are all looking forward to "breaking in" our new facility in a few short weeks! Click here for more info.

Our new Holiday Workshop schedule has been posted and, as always, we look forward to working with you side by side to create your own personal holiday arrangements!

Some new arrivals in the greenhouse include the new Split-leaf Monstera called "Cheesecake". When I first heard about it, I thought, "Hmm - another new variegated philo . . . woopie . . . ", but after laying eyes on it, I must say - I am truly impressed with this plant and its bold cheesecake colored variegation. Also new, is Pothos 'Pearls & Jade' which must be seen to be believed (pics just don't do it justice!) Also just in, some new bonsai starters & Braided Croton Trees that are very unique. Of course, our Poinsettia crop is looking absolutely phenomenal!

Hosta Empress Wu - The Wait Is Over!

This new mammoth hosta is taking the world by storm. With a mature mound height of 4 feet, huge, dark green leaves with prominent veins and thick substance up to 18" long, this is one ofthe largest ever. Produces pale lavender flowers on 5' scapes in summer.

These babies are hot commodities so you might want to get yours while they last.

It has been a long, busy summer. I can't believe how long it has been since my last post, but I have some exciting news to share, so I;m compelled to finally sit down.

We just received a shipment of hot new hostas. You won't find these anywhere else so come in and see them for yourself.

Kaleidochrome is a Hosta longipes seedling unlike any other variegated hosta. The leaves feature an incredible yellow streaking which is very attractive. The pattern is unique to each leaf.

Other new hostas include:

Crossing The Rubicon - Huge, thick, slug resistant, gold leaves to 11" long by 8" wide.

Fuzzy Dice - Unusual, rich, blue-green foliage. Leaves have good substance. Sport of Blue Suede Shoes.

Lionheart - Pure white center with blue green margin. Good grower for white centered hosta. Sport of Robin Hood.

Lothar the Giant - Large specimen has deep green leaves 14" x 10". Thick substance.

Garden Lilies For Color and Fragrance

Now that the lilies are starting to bloom, the perennial department is loaded with tons of color and sweet scent. Tellys' lily selection is better than ever in 2009..... Asiatic, Oriental, OT and LA hybrid lilies to satisfy everyone from the lily novice to collector.

Well, spring has been crazy, to be sure, but in addition to all the things that go on at the greenhouse in any given day, we are always working several months ahead. Behind the scenes, we've already begun growing our (always incredible) crops of fall mums! We produce more than 10,000 pots of mums spread across seven different plantings to ensure we have just the right colors & sizes for you - when you need them! Our first crop is already well under way (these are grown under shade to "trick" them into blooming early) and should be ready for August planting. With six more plantings to follow, we will be well stocked right through fall! (Our poinsettia crop will begin taking root just one month from now!) - Whew!

Raising Cane - Bamboos at Telly's

Wow! Is it really May 21st already? I've been trying to grab a few minutes to let everyone know that our bamboo are absolutely fabulous are better than ever in Telly's perennial department this spring.

Who hasn't dreamed of a little exotic or oriental touch in their gardens? With hardy bamboo it is quite possible, and easy too.

Our clumping boos, Fargesia rufa, F. murialae and F. robusta are thick, lush, well behaved evergreens with a somewhat weeping habit. They are excellent focal points or screens for lightly shaded area of the yard, kind of like evergreen Japanes maples.

For those who want really bold, somewhat aggressive bamboo, we also carry Phyllostachys alata and P. bissettii. These plants are already close to ten feet tall and are rock hardy in our climate. The much sought after black bamboo, P. nigra, though not as hardy, is also available.

While many may feel this is actually a "non-holiday", in our times, I can think of no other secular observances so worthy of attention.
After more than a century of thoughtless consumerism run amuck, the direct impact of our daily decisions is now becomming apparent. There is ONE Earth. We are ONE People.
DO something GREEN today!

In observance of EARTH DAY, here are some new GREEN things going on around the greenhouse:

The first garden I ever designed (in 5th grade) featured all GREEN flowers! Seeing this Primrose "Green Lace" in Telly's perennial department took me back! It's ruffled, it's green, and it will be finding it way into my garden today!

Peas are GREEN and I love them! Recent visitors to the greenhouse have had the chance to watch the progress of my EARTH BOX. This "earth-friendly method of growing vegetables is amazing! I planted ORGANIC Snap Peas & Carrots on March 1st. I've already harvested about half a pound of delicious carrots, and fresh raw peas are now a daily delight for the staff!

The Woods Are Alive!

On Easter morning my wife and I decided to enjoy the warm sunny spring day by taking a walk at one of our favorite local parks. Dodge Park has a wonderful array of walking/running/biking paths along the Clinton River and through a light woodland of mostly native trees.

The deciduous "forest" canopy, still naked, allowed he warm sunshine to reach the usually shaded ground and some of the earliest woodland wildflowers were taking advantage of the situation. Amid millions of Trout Lilies (Erythronium americanum) and Spring Beauty (Clintonia virginica) I spotted one of my favorites; Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) just emerging from beneath the leaf litter.

A poppy relative, Bloodroot is one of many early blooming woodland treasures of eastern North America. In a race to emerge, flower and set seed before the trees leaf out and effectively intercept the sun's rays before reaching the forest floor, our native woodland wildflowers have evolved qualities that make them valuable garden plants that provide color and excitement before most of our typical garden plants get started.

Trillium are certainly one of the most popular of these woodland natives and we currently have five species available:

Trillium grandiflorum
Trillium luteum
Trillium erectum
Trillium sessile
Trillium recurvatum

In bloom in several colors at Telly's, along with several other favorite spring wildflowers.

Including the previously mentioned Bloodroot, Hepatica, Dutchman's Britches (Dicentra cucullaria) and the gorgeous Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginica).

Zinnia 'Zahara Starlight'. I've been watching this one for a year or so and it looks like they have it perfected for 2010. This is the first bicolored flower on a mildew resistant plant. The 'Zahara' series is very similar to the 'Profusion' series but offers this unique color. Tellys will be offering a few of these plants in 2009!

Zinnia 'Profusion Yellow'. This is the best mildew resistant yellow zinnia available. It has good size flowers on plants that grow about 10-14" tall. This is sure to be a very popular plant. By the way, the 'Zahara' series is offering a new yellow that is very similar but from what I have seen thus far, the 'Profusion' version is slightly superior due to its uniformity and flower size.

Ipomoea 'Sweet Talk Light Green' and 'Purple'. These are sweet potato vines - some of the most popular bedding plants on the market - but with a new look. The foliage is exceptionally narrow providing an extra fine texture. This expands the sweet potato vine pallet to include a broad
range of colors as well as textures.

Petunia 'Sophistica Lime Rose Bicolor'. I sowed samples of this seed a few days ago not knowing what they would produce. The striped flowers have a color combination never seen in petunias before - Lime and Rose. I was pleasantly surprised to see this one. The flowers are large and
interesting but the flowers are somewhat variable producing some inconsistant striping. Nonetheless - a breeding breakthrough.

Hello from California! - Every year for about 9 days, plant companies from all over the world gather along the west coast of California to show off their varieties. At about 22 locations from San Diego to San Jose, 40+ different displays have been set up for growers, brokers, & retailers to see thousands of beautiful plants including new varieties for the next year (2010). We have been coming here for years to learn about and photograph the many plants the world's greatest breeders have to offer. Many of these plants will grace the benches at Tellys some day so that you can see for yourself what they have to offer. Following are some sneak peaks at some of the of the new plants we may be offering in 2010!

Calibrachoa 'Minifamous Double Amethyst'. There are a slew of new calibrachoa out there but this one offers a great color in a double flower form. Like the rest of the 'Minifamous' series, the self-cleaning flowers are held well above the foliage. This one has an extra bit of sheen to
its petals.

Petunia 'Pretty Much Picasso'. A new petunia plant that is interesting to say the least. This distinctive flower is rose with a green picotee edge. I couldn't believe it either but I photographed it just to prove it exists. This isn't for everyone but it will certainly become a conversation piece for gardeners everywhere.

Euphorbia 'Breathless Blush'. This type of euphorbia has become extremely popular the last few years and this one will surely become a favorite. It is similar to 'Diamond Frost' but with flowers "blushed" pink and foliage accented by a dark purplish center. If I had to pick one exceptional new plant for 2010, this is it!

Petunia 'Potunia Cappaccino'. This is one of many wild and crazy petunias that will be available in 2010. These almost beige flowers are accented by a center suffused with brown and purple. Some gardeners will find this color combination priceless while others (I'm sure) will find it useless. I can't wait for you to see this in real life!

Cordyline 'Renegade'. This is the darkest Cordyline we have yet to offer. The nearly black leaves provide a perfect focal point in containers or beds. It prefers sun or part sun and grows with very little maintenance. Try this one with gold foliage!

Well, this is my last day at the pack trials, & I have to get back on the road. There are plenty more exciting new finds I can't wait to share with you! I'll try to get some more "sneak peels" posted when I get back to Troy, over the weekend . . .

Days Start Early Out On The Farm

So many things happen at once this time of year, it's almost hard to keep track! George is touring growers up & down the left coast looking for NEW plants for 2010! The California Pack Trials provide the opportunity to observe the performance of new varieties in the ground, and the chance to determine which are worth growing for next year! (Yes, we really start a year in advance!)
Before he left, George & I spent an early morning reviewing the progress out at the farm (which at the rate Maria & crew are transplanting, is filling up quickly!) Many of the pants you see here were selected at last year's Pack Trials, and will be in the greenhouse in just a few short weeks as "New Plants for 2009"!
Afterwards, we were off to Ann Arbor to meet with our web site programmer to check on the progress of all the exciting new changes coming to the web site. We are very anxious to unveil the new look & all the new features! This has been a winter-long project, and we hope to share the results of our efforts later this month! As always, we look forward to your feedback!

Yeah, OK, maybe it's time I admit I'm just a sucker for weird plants, (I prefer to think of them as plants with "attitude") but here's another one! Introducing: Aeschynanthus radicans 'Rasta' - or, if you prefer, a Rastafarian Lipstick Plant! The traditional red "lipstick" blooms seem merely a perk when considering the curiously tantalizing texture created by the foliage . . .

Speaking of tantalizing, the greenhouse is really ramping up for spring! For those of us working in the greenhouse, one of the sure annual signs that planting season is soon to break, is when our heads become shaded by the thousands of hanging baskets we grow each year. Don't ask me how, but Maria & her crew managed to fill more than half the canopy of the greenhouse with baskets, in between transplanting thousands & thousands of seedlings and cuttings, in just the past few days! - Amazing! -

Pansies Are In!

Although I think we'll all be remembering this winter for a while, it's finally, officially over! And, while it may still be a few weeks before we can start actively putzing in the garden, we can start getting some color out there to keep our emerging tulips and daffs company! Pansies are in! These plants are tough, and have been grown cold, so they are ready to help you celebrate the much awaited arrival of spring!

Well Judy & George packed the house Saturday with their overwhelmingly popular "Growing Plants from Cuttings" workshop! - I must say, its so very nice to see people in the greenhouse again - a sure sign that Spring IS coming! In trying times like these, we begin to take better stock in what's really important; family, home, and community. Over the past year, we have seen many gardeners returning to vegetable gardening as therapy, a way to cut costs, and to bolster a sense of personal accomplishment. At the same time, as gardeners, we have begun to rediscover the superior taste & health benefits of homegrown produce. Although it may still several weeks before we can plant outdoors, T&M "Seed Sprouters" can be planted indoors, now! From its delicate grass-like foliage emerge multiple spindle of proudly held gold buds. (This is the only plant I know that naturally produces metallic cold color! - Truly a sight to see!) When mature, these buds reveal tiny, pure white, miniature chrysanthemum-like blooms. From New Zealand, Mikado is perfectly suited to the indoor temps of your home, but since it get way too warm in the greenhouse in summer, this is the only time of year we offer this botanical treasure. Don’t miss out!

A&E films at Telly's!

It was an exiting day in the greenhouse today! The A&E film crew was in to shoot a segment for a new show called "After the first 48". In the segment, which should air nationally in mid-June, our very own George assists a family in planning a memorial vegetable garden in conjunction with Urban Farming.

Originally, they had intended to shoot one portion of the show in our greenhouse, but, they were so impressed by the setting, they filmed for an additional two hours, capturing additional segments for the show! The crew was great, and we had alot of fun working with them. When they finished, more than half of them went shopping at Telly's, collecting treasures to take with them as they disperse across the country.

We are all looking forward to seeing George's national television debut! We will be sure to let you know when it will air!

Wow! Thanks for playing! There were alot of good guesses. Unfortunately, no one guessed the plant correctly. Although it's a common houseplant, very few of us "northern gardeners" have had the opportunity to see it bloom. And, while the game may be over, there's still time to stop by the greenhouse & see it blooming! What is it? Aloe vera. Drop me a comment if you guys want to play again!

It has been an incredibly busy week! A fresh load of tropicals arrived from Florida, so if you can't afford to get away just now, stop and enjoy a tropical moment for yourself! There are Bananas, Mangos, Avacados, Cashew, and a plethora of Alocasias in all their diverse splendor, just to name a few... It's a refreshing pleasure just to see! - PLUS several new introductions for 2009! New pottery & accents are hitting the shelves every week.

A big thanks go out to Julian Adams for his spectacular Bonsai presentations today. It was an amazing turn-out, and is always a pleasure to host the events with the Four Season Bonsai Club!

WOW! Things are really moving fast in the greenhouse! Filled to the brim with seedlings & cuttings, we've already begun transfering thousands of plants to the farm to make room for more. I'm expecting some exciting new pottery lines this week, and a HUGE shipment of exotic tropicals by the week-end (including more NEW for 2009 introductions), along with more bonsai plants & pots.

Thompson & Morgan Arrives at Telly's!

That's Right! Thompson & Morgan seeds just came in this past week, making for more than 500 varieties available in the greenhouse now, with even more to come! World renowned for it's prized selections ranging from reliable performers to the unique & exotic, we believe our T&M collection to be the best of the best. Presenting nearly 200 varieties in this line alone, we are proud to be offering "The Kew Collection" from Kew Gardens, and a special section of fun to grow things just for the kids! ( A few of us "older" folks have already put ouselves back in this catagory;)

We are also currently stocking over 100 varieties of Certified Organic seeds!!!

We've just finished transplanting the first pansies of the season, so they will be available for all you early-birds in April. Returning will be the exciting "Frizzle Sizzle" series that was so wildly popular last year, with good reason. Well, the ground-hog is back in his hole, and spring is definetely on it's way! We are starting to see new arrivals in the greenhouse on a regular basis, and things are really beginning to take shape! The new "Wood Root Blue" pottery just arrived from Campania, along with some charming accents for the garden like "Gnome Homes".

We are also working on some pretty exciting changes for the website which will include a new look & lots more informative nooks & crannies for you to explore!

Itoh Peonies

Itoh (or Intersectional) hybrid peonies have been somewhat of a "holy grail" for discerning gardeners for years. Though the first succesful cross of tree and herbaceous peonies was made in 1948 by Toichi Itoh it was years before these seedlings would bloom and many more decades before intersectionals were readily available to the public (at a cost of around $1,000).

Why are Itohs so special? By blending the genes of "tree" and herbaceous peonies you get full bushy plants produced from eyes at soil level (like grandma's peonies). Inherited from the tree peony are attractive dissected foliage, huge flowers up to 10" in diameter, strong stems that easily support said flowers and a wide range of colors including yellow. A mature Itoh peony will bear 30 to 50 flowers over several weeks in late spring.

For 2009 we have added more varieties and found a source of micropropagated plants, allowing us to offer a great selection at greater prices (price has dropped $20.00 per plant). We will also have some nice large flowering size plants available at fantastic prices.

Need a winter pick-me-up? Seeing things growing again is the perfect medicine! Stop by - we love to see winter visitors! - We're VERY anxious to start sharing all the cool things going on in the greenhouse already! Everyone is hard at work getting spring ready for you, and we are all VERY excited for you to begin discovering all the "Neat New Stuff" we have planned for you! Maria & Carmella just finished transplanting the first crop of Fuchsia baskets this week, and a fresh load of Houseplants, Tropicals & Bonsai just arrived on Saturday - There's some VERY COOL STUFF here, guys . . . Stop by & check it out!
- Packaged seed is in, with more coming! We've really vamped up our selection for 2009, with a nice big selection of Heirlooms, Certified Organic Seeds, and lots of FUN stuff for the kids to grow! We've carried Livingston Seed & Botanical Interests for several years, and we're glad this tradition continues. (These are both family owned companies & have always done a great job with quality, selection, & information.) We've also added Thompson & Morgan to the line-up, and although not family owned, they sure do carry seeds for some crAzy PlaNts!
